Post-stroke Cognitive Impairment

Post-stroke cognitive impairment is a decline in thinking abilities that develops after a stroke, affecting functions such as attention, memory, language, executive control, or visuospatial processing. It arises when cerebrovascular injury disrupts brain networks and may be influenced by lesion location, stroke severity, vascular risk factors, and coexisting neurological or mood changes. Clinical evaluation combines patient history with cognitive screening and, when needed, neuropsychological testing to characterize affected domains and distinguish impairment from communication or motor limitations. Recognizing it supports individualized rehabilitation, safety planning, caregiver education, and secondary stroke prevention, while ongoing research seeks better biomarkers and targeted interventions.

Cognitive Dissonance

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...
