Transcanal Otologic Surgery

Transcanal otologic surgery is an approach to ear surgery performed through the external auditory canal, providing access to the tympanic membrane and middle-ear structures without a large incision behind the ear. Surgeons use a microscope or endoscope to visualize the operative field, then remove diseased tissue or repair structures through the natural canal while preserving surrounding anatomy. This technique supports procedures such as tympanoplasty, cholesteatoma management, and selected ossicular or stapes operations. By reducing soft-tissue disruption, transcanal approaches can improve cosmetic outcomes, shorten recovery, and expand minimally invasive options for treating conductive hearing loss and other middle-ear disorders.
