Brain Gut Peptides

Brain-gut peptides are signaling molecules produced in, or acting between, the gastrointestinal tract and nervous system, where they coordinate digestion, appetite, energy balance, and brain function. Peptides such as ghrelin, cholecystokinin, and glucagon-like peptide-1 bind receptors on gut, vagal, and central neurons, transmitting information through circulating signals and the vagus nerve to alter neuronal activity and hormone release. In neuroscience, studying these pathways clarifies how internal bodily states influence motivation, stress, learning, and behavior, while also informing research on obesity, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, and potential peptide-based therapies.

We present procedures for demonstrating that ligands bind to the surface membrane of the cellulose-digesting protozoa in the gut of Formosan subterranean termites using fluorescent microscopy and that ligands coupled with lytic peptides kill these protozoa in vitro (anaerobic protozoa culture) and in vivo (injection into the termite hindgut).

Gut-Brain Axis

2026

The gut–brain axis is a bidirectional communication system that connects the gastrointestinal tract and the brain. This interaction is mediated through multiple pathways, including the vagus nerve, hormonal signals, immune responses, and chemical messengers produced by gut microbes.Microbial Contributions to Brain FunctionGut microbiota contributes significantly to brain function by producing neuroactive compounds. These include neuroactive compounds that influence neurotransmitters such as...

Visualization of Amyloid-Beta Peptides in Human Cortical Brain Slices

The video demonstrates a procedure for preparing human cortical brain slices from Alzheimer's disease patients for analyzing the deposition of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides using Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Imaging Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-IMS). The steps include preparing the slides, treating the tissue to enhance ionization, and analyzing the spatial distribution of amyloid-beta peptides.
