Chemical Stimuli

Chemical stimuli are molecules or dissolved substances that trigger a biological response when detected by cells, making them essential signals in neuroscience and sensory physiology. In neural systems, they bind to specific membrane receptors, opening or closing ion channels or activating intracellular signaling pathways that alter membrane potential and influence neurotransmitter release or gene expression. This mechanism allows neurons and sensory receptors to detect odors, tastes, hormones, metabolites, and potentially harmful compounds. Studying chemical stimuli helps explain synaptic communication, perception, behavior, and neural disorders, while supporting research on pharmacological treatments and experimental methods for measuring receptor activity.

Micro-fabricated devices integrated with fluidic components provide an in vitro platform for cell studies mimicking the in vivo micro-environment. We developed polymethylmethacrylate-based microfluidic chips for studying cellular responses under single or coexisting chemical/electrical/shear stress stimuli.

Irrelevant Stimuli and Action Control: Analyzing the Influence of Ignored Stimuli via the Distractor-Response Binding Paradigm

The distractor-response binding paradigm is described. It can be used to shed light on the influence irrelevant stimuli, competing with targets for a response, can have on human action. Both response retrieval effects and distractor inhibition effects can be analyzed within the paradigm.

Presented here is a protocol for the induction and analysis of in vitro neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Quantification of DNA, cathelicidin (LL37), and enzyme activity yielded data that show the variability in the composition and morphology of NETs induced by microbial and chemical stimuli under similar controlled conditions.

Chemical Formulas

2020

A chemical formula presents information about the proportions of atoms constituting a particular chemical compound or molecule, mainly using symbols of elements and numbers. At times other symbols, such as dashes, parentheses, brackets, commas, plus, and minus signs, are also used. A chemical formula can be one of three types – molecular, empirical, and structural. Molecular Formula The molecular formula represents a molecule or a chemical compound using chemical symbols (to indicate the...
