Bismuth Subsalicylate

Bismuth subsalicylate is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve acute diarrhea, indigestion, heartburn, and nausea, making it an important example of a multifunctional pharmacological agent. Its bismuth component coats gastrointestinal mucosa and can inhibit several enteric pathogens, while the salicylate component reduces intestinal inflammation, secretion, and motility. These complementary actions support its use in symptomatic treatment and, in combination with antibiotics and acid suppression, in some Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens. Pharmacological considerations include temporary darkening of the tongue or stool, salicylate-related drug interactions, and avoidance in individuals with salicylate sensitivity or certain pediatric viral illnesses.
