Electron Scattering Dynamics

Electron scattering dynamics describes how electrons change direction, energy, or momentum when they interact with atoms, molecules, surfaces, or other particles. The process is governed by electromagnetic forces and can involve elastic scattering, which primarily changes an electron’s trajectory, or inelastic scattering, which transfers energy to excite atoms, generate vibrations, or release secondary electrons. Measuring scattering angles, energies, and time-dependent behavior reveals interaction cross sections and material properties. In physics, these dynamics support studies of atomic structure, plasma behavior, radiation transport, and condensed matter, while informing technologies such as electron microscopy, spectroscopy, semiconductor characterization, and particle detectors.

Source: Moore, M. D., et al. Alternative In Vitro Methods for the Determination of Viral Capsid Structural Integrity. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)The video demonstrates a protocol for monitoring the heat-induced aggregation of virus-like particles using dynamic light scattering (DLS). It begins with preparing a monodisperse suspension of purified particles. The sample is then loaded into a preheated DLS instrument. As the capsid proteins denature with heat, exposed hydrophobic regions cause particle...
