Nerve Cells

Nerve cells, or neurons, are specialized cells that receive, process, and transmit information throughout the nervous system, making them central to sensation, thought, emotion, and behavior. They communicate by generating electrical signals called action potentials and releasing chemical neurotransmitters at synapses, where signals can excite or inhibit neighboring cells. In psychology, studying nerve cells helps explain how neural circuits support learning, memory, motivation, perception, and decision-making. Research on neuronal communication also clarifies how changes in synaptic function contribute to conditions such as depression, anxiety, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative disease, supporting the development of more targeted interventions.

Gene Transfer into Schwann Cells of the Rodent Sciatic Nerve via Electroporation

Source: Ino, D. et. al., In Vivo Gene Transfer to Schwann Cells in the Rodent Sciatic Nerve by Electroporation. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates in vivo gene transfer to Schwann cells of the rodent sciatic nerve using electroporation. A plasmid DNA–dye solution is injected into the nerve, and electric pulses facilitate DNA entry. The DNA later integrates into the cell’s genome, enabling successful gene transfer in Schwann cells.
