Immersive Simulation

Immersive simulation is a method for placing people or animals in interactive, computer-generated environments that reproduce selected features of real-world situations for studying behavior. Visual, auditory, and sometimes haptic feedback changes in response to the participant’s actions, allowing researchers to control stimuli while recording decisions, movement, attention, and other behavioral responses. In behavioral science, immersive simulations can model social interactions, hazardous settings, learning tasks, or clinical scenarios without exposing participants to comparable real-world risks. By combining experimental control with realistic context, the method supports more ecologically relevant studies of perception, cognition, emotion, and action.

2023

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Sanjay Adhikari; Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Objects, vehicles, and organisms immersed in fluid mediums experience forces from the surrounding fluid in the form of buoyancy- a vertical upward force due to fluid weight, drag- a resistive force opposite the direction of motion, and lift- a force perpendicular to the direction of motion. Prediction and characterization of these forces is...

The siphon breaking phenomenon was investigated experimentally and a theoretical model was proposed. A simulation program based on the theoretical model was developed and the results of the simulation program were compared with experimental results. It was concluded that the results of the simulation program matched the experimental results well.

2012

An efficient way to gain insight into how humans navigate themselves in three dimensions is described. The method takes advantage of a motion simulator capable of moving observers in ways unattainable by traditional simulators. Results confirm that movement in the horizontal plane is underestimated, while vertical movement is overestimated.
