Aqueous Fraction Analysis

Aqueous fraction analysis is the characterization of water-soluble components separated from a complex biological, chemical, or biomass-derived sample, providing insight into composition and process performance. The method typically isolates the aqueous phase through extraction or phase separation, then measures dissolved compounds according to properties such as concentration, polarity, or molecular size using suitable analytical techniques. In bioengineering, this analysis supports bioprocess monitoring, biomass and waste valorization, metabolite profiling, and evaluation of product recovery. Comparing aqueous fractions across processing conditions can reveal solute partitioning, identify valuable compounds, and guide improvements in separation efficiency and downstream purification.

A two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry method is described for characterization of the aqueous fraction of bio-crude produced from hydrothermal liquefaction of algae. This protocol can also be employed to analyze the aqueous fraction of liquid products from fast pyrolysis, catalytic fast pyrolysis, catalytic deoxygenation and hydro-treating.

2021

The aqueous humor is a high-yield liquid biopsy for retinoblastoma, intraocular cancer that cannot be biopsied in vivo due to the risk of extraocular spread. Herein, a method for safely extracting aqueous humor via clear corneal paracentesis and steps for genomic analysis to identify prognostic biomarkers are presented.

Chemical Reactions in Aqueous Solutions

2020

Chemical substances interact in many different ways. Certain chemical reactions exhibit common patterns of reactivity. Due to the vast number of chemical reactions, it becomes necessary to classify them based on the observed patterns of interaction. Water is a good solvent that can dissolve many substances. For this reason, many chemical reactions take place in water. Such reactions are called aqueous reactions. The three most common types of aqueous reactions are precipitation, acid-base, and...

Preparation of Mitochondrial Enriched Fractions for Metabolic Analysis in Drosophila

Mitochondria play central roles in the regulation of metabolism and homeostasis. Subtle changes in mitochondrial metabolism that affect organismal physiology could be difficult to detect in whole organism metabolomics studies. Here we describe an isolation method that enhances the detection of subtle metabolic shifts in Drosophila melanogaster.
