Foster Mothers

Foster mothers are female animals that nurture and rear offspring to which they are not genetically related, providing maternal care when the biological mother is unavailable or cannot support development. In bioengineering, embryos or newborns may be transferred to a foster mother, whose pregnancy, lactation, thermoregulation, and caregiving environment support survival and maturation; successful fostering depends on physiological compatibility and acceptance of the offspring. This approach helps researchers maintain engineered animal lines, evaluate genetic modifications, and produce organisms for disease modeling or biotechnology studies. Foster mothers therefore connect reproductive biology with practical strategies for developing and studying genetically altered animals.

Using a Murine Model of Psychosocial Stress in Pregnancy as a Translationally Relevant Paradigm for Psychiatric Disorders in Mothers and Infants

2021

The chronic psychosocial stress (CGS) paradigm employs clinically relevant stressors during pregnancy in mice to model psychiatric disorders of mothers and infants. Here, we provide a step-by-step procedure of applying the CGS paradigm and downstream assessments to validate this model.

A Common Marmoset Model of Mother-Infant Intervention for Breastfeeding Disorders in the Presence of Paternal Inhibition and Maternal Neglect

2023

Here, we present a nonhuman primate model of mother-infant intervention for breastfeeding disorders in the presence of paternal inhibition and maternal neglect. The mate model video complements education to support primate and human caregivers with respect to infants with breastfeeding problems such as pain.

Combining Magnetic Sorting of Mother Cells and Fluctuation Tests to Analyze Genome Instability During Mitotic Cell Aging in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

2014

Mutation rates in young Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells measured through fluctuation tests are used to predict mutation frequencies for mother cells of different replicative ages. Magnetic sorting and flow cytometry are then used to measure actual mutation frequencies and age of mother cells to identify any deviations from predicted mutation frequencies.

Myocardial Infarction in Neonatal Mice, A Model of Cardiac Regeneration

This protocol describes a highly reproducible model of cardiac regeneration by surgical induction of myocardial infarction in the left ventricle of postnatal day 1 mice. The method involves induction of hypothermic anesthesia and ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery.

A Novel Surgical Approach for Intratracheal Administration of Bioactive Agents in a Fetal Mouse Model

We developed a novel surgical approach for intratracheal administration of bioactive agents into the mouse fetus. The delivery route is more efficient in targeting the fetal mouse lungs than the commonly used intra-amniotic injection. This procedure has to date not been described in a mouse model.
