Zebrafish Heartbeat

Zebrafish heartbeat is the rhythmic electrical and mechanical activity that drives blood circulation in the zebrafish heart, making it a useful model for studying cardiac function and development. Pacemaker cells generate spontaneous electrical impulses that spread through the atrium and ventricle, triggering calcium-dependent contraction and relaxation in a coordinated cycle. Because embryos are small, genetically tractable, and optically accessible, researchers can visualize cardiac dynamics and quantify beat rate, rhythm, blood flow, and structural defects. In bioengineering, these measurements support drug screening, cardiotoxicity testing, cardiovascular disease modeling, and the design of computational or engineered systems that reproduce heart function.

Anesthesia-free Heartbeat Measurements in Freely Moving Zebrafish

2025

The study aims to develop technology for anesthesia-free heartbeat measurements in moving zebrafish. Our approach combines shortwave-infrared imaging and machine-learning-based tracking of the heart. It is a non-invasive, label-free, and user-friendly technique that suits a wide range of studies on the zebrafish model.

We have developed a Semi-automated Optical Heartbeat Analysis method (SOHA) for analyzing high speed optical recordings from Drosophila, zebrafish and embryonic mouse hearts. We demonstrate the application of our methodology to the analysis of heart function in fruit fly and embryonic mouse hearts.

A method to conditionally knockdown a target protein’s expression in the adult zebrafish retina is described, which involves intravitreally injecting antisense morpholinos and electroporating them into the retina. The resulting protein is knocked down for several days, which allows testing the protein’s role in the regenerating or intact retina.

Nephrotoxin Microinjection in Zebrafish to Model Acute Kidney Injury

Renal injuries incurred from nephrotoxins, which include drugs ranging from antibiotics to chemotherapeutics, can result in complex disorders whose pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. This protocol demonstrates how zebrafish can be used for disease modeling of these conditions, which can be applied to the identification of renoprotective measures.
