Plant Fungus Interaction

Plant-fungus interaction is the relationship between plants and fungi, ranging from mutually beneficial symbiosis to harmful infection, and it influences plant nutrition, health, and ecosystem function. The interaction begins with molecular recognition between fungal signals and plant receptors, which can trigger nutrient exchange in mycorrhizae or activate immune defenses during pathogenesis. Biological techniques such as controlled inoculation, microscopy, fungal culture, and gene-expression analysis help researchers characterize colonization, signaling, and disease progression. These studies support the development of mycorrhizal inoculants, sustainable crop protection strategies, and improved understanding of plant immunity and nutrient cycling.

We describe a robust gene replacement strategy to genetically manipulate the smut fungus Ustilago maydis. This protocol explains how to generate deletion mutants to investigate infection phenotypes. It can be extended to modify genes in any desired way, e.g., by adding a sequence encoding a fluorescent protein tag.

Microbe-Plant Interactions

2026

Microbe-plant interactions represent a dynamic spectrum of associations shaped by intricate chemical signaling. These interactions can be neutral, beneficial, or detrimental, and profoundly influence plant physiology, growth, and ecosystem function. The plant microbiome, comprising bacteria, fungi, archaea, protists, and viruses, plays a pivotal role in mediating these effects through surface colonization, internal colonization, or systemic symbiosis.Mutualistic associations, particularly with...
