Blastocyst Stage

The blastocyst stage is an early phase of mammalian embryonic development in which the fertilized egg forms a fluid-filled structure prepared for implantation in the uterus. After cleavage divisions, cells organize into an outer trophoblast layer, an inner cell mass, and a blastocoel cavity; compaction and fluid accumulation drive this reorganization. The trophoblast contributes to placental tissues, while the inner cell mass gives rise to the embryo proper. Studying blastocyst formation helps explain implantation, early lineage specification, and causes of developmental failure, and supports assisted reproductive technologies, embryo culture, and research on pluripotent stem cells.

Blastocyst biopsy and vitrification are required to efficiently conduct preimplantation genetic testing. An approach entailing the sequential opening of the zona pellucida and retrieval of 7-8 trophectoderm cells in day 5-7 post-insemination limits both the number of manipulations required and the exposure of the embryo to sub-optimal environmental conditions.

MicroSecure Vitrification was developed as a non-commercial, aseptic closed vitrification device system that is compliant with FDA good manufacturing and tissue-handling practices. Due to the withdrawal of hydrophobic plugged embryo straws from the industry, the vitrification procedure was modified to include an inner seal before the standard internal cotton plug.

Stages of Sleep

2024

Sleep progresses through distinct stages, each characterized by specific brain wave patterns and physiological responses ranging from wakefulness to stages of non-rapid eye movement, known as non-REM, to rapid eye movement, referred to as REM. Understanding these stages helps in recognizing how sleep supports various bodily and cognitive functions. Before sleep begins, in wakefulness, the brain exhibits primarily beta waves, which are high in frequency and low in amplitude, indicating alertness...
