Brdu Uptake

BrdU uptake is a laboratory measure of cell proliferation that tracks newly synthesized DNA. During S phase, cells incorporate the thymidine analog 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU) in place of thymidine, and researchers detect the labeled DNA with anti-BrdU antibodies after DNA denaturation. This assay can quantify proliferating cells, estimate cell-cycle activity, and compare growth responses under different biological conditions. In biology, BrdU uptake supports studies of development, tissue renewal, immune activation, and responses to drugs or environmental signals, although interpretation depends on labeling timing and detection method.

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.

Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) Labeling and Subsequent Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting for Culture-independent Identification of Dissolved Organic Carbon-degrading Bacterioplankton

Environmental bacterioplankton are incubated with a model dissolved organic carbon (DOC) compound and a DNA labeling reagent, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). Afterward, DOC-degrading cells are separated from the bulk community based on their elevated BrdU incorporation using fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS). These cells are then identified by subsequent molecular analyses.
