Heart Valve Isolation

Heart valve isolation is a biological dissection technique used to separate individual heart valves from surrounding cardiac tissue for focused study of their structure and function. The procedure typically involves carefully excising the valve, removing attached myocardium and connective tissue, and preserving the leaflet, annulus, and supporting structures under conditions that maintain tissue integrity. Isolated valves support investigations of valve anatomy, extracellular matrix organization, biomechanics, cellular behavior, and disease-related remodeling. They also provide important materials for histological analysis, mechanical testing, cell culture, and tissue-engineering research aimed at understanding valve development and improving replacement therapies.

The human heart is a complex organ with an intricate system of valves that regulate blood flow. There are two main types of valves: atrioventricular (AV) valves and semilunar valves. The AV valves prevent the backflow of blood from the ventricles to the atria during ventricular contraction. These valves function with the assistance of the chordae tendineae and papillary muscles. When the ventricles are relaxed, the chordae tendineae are slack, allowing blood to flow from the atria into the...

In order to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neotissue formation and stenosis development in tissue engineered heart valves, a murine model of heterotopic heart valve transplantation was developed. A pulmonary heart valve was transplanted to recipient using the heterotopic heart transplantation technique.
