Microenvironment Control

Microenvironment control is the deliberate regulation of the local physical, chemical, and biological conditions surrounding cells, tissues, or microorganisms to influence their behavior and function. In biology, researchers adjust factors such as pH, oxygen tension, temperature, nutrient availability, extracellular matrix composition, and signaling molecules, often using controlled culture systems or biomaterials. These conditions can alter cell survival, proliferation, differentiation, migration, and gene expression. Microenvironment control supports reproducible cell culture, organoid development, tissue engineering, and disease modeling, while helping researchers investigate how local conditions contribute to processes such as development, regeneration, cancer progression, and therapeutic response.

Microfluidic oxygen control confers more than just convenience and speed over hypoxic chambers for biological experiments. Especially when implemented via diffusion through a membrane, microfluidic oxygen can provide simultaneous liquid and gas phase modulations at the microscale-level. This technique enables dynamic multi-parametric experiments critical for studying islet pathophysiology.

A combinatorial functional screening method for gaining insights into the impacts of the molecular composition of microenvironments on cellular functions is described. The method takes advantage of existing microarray-based technologies to generate arrays of defined combinatorial microenvironments that support cell adhesion and functional analysis.

Microorganisms inhabit highly localized spaces known as microenvironments, which are defined by distinct physical and chemical characteristics. These include oxygen concentration, pH, temperature, light availability, and nutrient levels. The conditions within a microenvironment can differ markedly from those in the surrounding area and significantly influence microbial growth, metabolism, and community structure.Microenvironments often display sharp physicochemical gradients over small spatial...

The Tumor Microenvironment

Every normal cell or tissue is embedded in a complex local environment called stroma, consisting of different cell types, a basal membrane, and blood vessels. As normal cells mutate and develop into cancer cells, their local environment also changes to allow cancer progression. The tumor microenvironment (TME) consists of a complex cellular matrix of stromal cells and the developing tumor. The cross-talk between cancer cells and surrounding stromal cells is critical to disrupt normal tissue...
