Muscle Tension Measurement

Muscle tension measurement is the quantitative assessment of force produced by a muscle or muscle preparation, providing a way to study contraction, performance, and function in biology. In a typical assay, the muscle is attached to a force transducer that records changes in tension while conditions such as muscle length, stimulation intensity, or load are controlled; isometric measurements keep length constant, whereas isotonic measurements track shortening against a load. These data help characterize force–length and force–velocity relationships, compare healthy and diseased tissue, and evaluate neuromuscular mechanisms, exercise responses, or potential therapies. The approach connects cellular contractility with whole-muscle physiology.

Tests of Hardened Concrete in Tension

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In a previous laboratory focused on concrete in compression, we observed that concrete can withstand very large stresses under uniaxial compressive forces. However, the failures observed were not compressive failures but failures along shear planes where maximum tensile forces occur. Thus, it is important to understand the behavior of concrete in tension and particularly its maximum strength...

Tension Tests of Polymers

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Polymeric materials are widely used in civil structures, with uses ranging from very soft sealants to more rigid pipes in water and wastewater systems. The most basic definition of a polymer is a molecular structure with repeating subunits. The term polymer comes from Greek, where "poly" means many, and "-mer" means basic unit. Monomers, or single mers, are the specific repeating units. With...

Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potentials in Mouse Forelimb Muscles In Vivo

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique for measuring compound muscle action potential (CMAP) in mice. It outlines the steps for setting up electrodes, stimulating forelimb neurons that innervate muscle fibers, and recording muscle responses. The technique assesses neuronal demyelination and functional neuron loss.

C. elegans Muscle Area Measurements: A Standardized Method to Quantify Striated Muscle Morphology

2023

C. elegans have two types of muscles, single sarcomere and multiple sarcomere, or striated muscles. This video describes the arrangement of the striated body wall muscles, which are responsible for a worm’s locomotion and includes a sample protocol to measure muscle morphology using image analysis software.
