Oxythermal Oxygen Electron

Oxythermal oxygen electron transfer describes the movement of electrons to oxygen under conditions where oxygen availability and temperature influence biological energy production. In aerobic respiration, electrons pass through membrane-bound carriers in the electron transport chain, while oxygen serves as the terminal electron acceptor and combines with protons to form water; this flow drives proton-gradient formation and ATP synthesis. Studying these reactions helps explain how cells balance energy generation with reactive oxygen species formation, particularly when oxygen levels or temperature change. The concept is relevant to cellular metabolism, stress physiology, mitochondrial function, and research on organisms living in oxygen- and temperature-variable environments.

Detecting Reactive Oxygen Species

2023

Reactive oxygen species are chemically active, oxygen-derived molecules capable of oxidizing other molecules. Because of their reactive nature, there are many deleterious effects associated with unchecked ROS production, including structural damage to DNA and other biological molecules. However, ROS can also be mediators of physiological signaling. There is accumulating evidence that ROS play significant roles in everything from activation of transcription factors to the mediation of...

Electron Transport Chains

2019

The final stage of cellular respiration is oxidative phosphorylation that consists of two steps: the electron transport chain and chemiosmosis. The electron transport chain is a set of proteins found in the inner mitochondrial membrane in eukaryotic cells. Its primary function is to establish a proton gradient that can be used during chemiosmosis to produce ATP and generate electron carriers, such as NAD+ and FAD, that are used in glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. The ETC is comprised of...

We present an experimental procedure for measuring the partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) in cerebral vasculature based on oxygen-dependent quenching of phosphorescence. Animal preparation and imaging procedures were outlined for both large field of view CCD-based imaging of pO2 in rats and 2-photon excitation based imaging of pO2 in mice.
