Parasitoid Rearing

Parasitoid rearing is the laboratory production and maintenance of parasitoid insects, which develop on or inside a host and ultimately kill it, making the process important for biological control and insect research. Rearing systems maintain suitable temperature, humidity, light, host quality, and developmental timing while providing parasitoid females with appropriate hosts for oviposition; their offspring then develop through immature stages before emerging as adults. Reliable production supports studies of host-parasitoid biology, behavior, ecology, and population dynamics. It also enables mass release of selected species against agricultural pests, offering a research-based approach to integrated pest management and reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.

Rearing the Fruit Fly Drosophila melanogaster Under Axenic and Gnotobiotic Conditions

A method for rearing Drosophila melanogaster under axenic and gnotobiotic conditions is presented. Fly embryos are dechorionated in sodium hypochlorite, transferred aseptically to sterile diet, and reared in closed containers. Inoculating diet and embryos with bacteria leads to gnotobiotic associations, and bacterial presence is confirmed by plating whole-body Drosophila homogenates.
