Thorax Injection

Thorax injection is a biological technique that delivers a measured substance into the thoracic region of an organism, most commonly a small invertebrate such as an insect, for controlled experimental study. Using a fine needle or microinjection system, researchers pierce the thoracic cuticle and deposit material into underlying tissue or the hemolymph while minimizing injury and fluid loss. The injected material may include drugs, pathogens, nucleic acids, dyes, or other experimental compounds. This method supports research on physiology, immunity, infection, toxicology, and gene function by enabling precise manipulation and observation of responses in living organisms.

Muscles of the Thorax

The thorax muscles are central to the body's respiration and provide essential support and movement for the upper body. They are intricately designed to facilitate the complex breathing process while also contributing to the structural integrity and mobility of the chest and upper limbs. The diaphragm is at the core of thoracic musculature, the primary muscle involved in breathing. This expansive, dome-shaped muscle marks the division between the thoracic and abdominal cavities. It originates...

Veins of Thorax

The azygos system is a crucial part of the body's circulatory system and drains most of the thorax. It comprises the azygos, hemiazygos, and accessory hemiazygos veins. The azygos vein, positioned just right of the midline and anterior to the vertebral column, begins at the junction of the right ascending lumbar and subcostal veins, terminating in the superior vena cava. This vein drains blood from the right side of the thoracic wall, thoracic viscera, and posterior abdominal wall. The...

Reverse genetic approaches have proven extremely useful for determining which genes underly resistance to vector pathogens in mosquitoes. This video protocol illustrates a method used by the James lab to inject dsRNA into female A. aegypti mosquitoes, which harbor the dengue virus. The technique for calibrating injection needles, manipulating the injection setup, and injecting dsRNA into the thorax is illustrated.

(2015)This video demonstrates the injection of Listeria monocytogenes into the tail vein of a mouse to establish systemic infection. It shows bacterial circulation, organ colonization, and the quantification of bacterial load in the heart by homogenizing tissue, performing serial dilutions, and plating.
