Track Etching

Track etching is a materials-processing technique that converts radiation-induced damage paths in a solid, typically a polymer film, into controlled microscopic pores. High-energy ions first pass through the material and break polymer bonds along narrow trajectories; a chemical etchant then dissolves the damaged regions faster than the surrounding film, forming channels with defined size and density. In biology, track-etched membranes support cell separation, filtration, and controlled transport of biomolecules, while their uniform pores can provide reproducible platforms for cell culture and tissue-engineering studies. Adjusting irradiation and etching conditions enables researchers to tailor membrane architecture for specific experimental or biomedical applications.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In a staggeringly complex and engaging world, it is crucial to selectively process some stimuli at the expense of others. Experimental psychologists call this ability attention. Specifically, visual attention refers to the ability to selectively process aspects of a visual scene. Many paradigms used to study visual attention involve brief, punctuated, and repeated trials. However, everyday situations often place sustained demands...

Eye Tracking in Cognitive Experiments

2023

Eye tracking as the name suggests involves tracking of eye-movements. It is a non-invasive, sensitive tool that quantifies and measures eye-movements to describe an individuals' cognitive state. An eye-movement between two fixation points is called a saccade, which is one of the fastest motor movements in our body. By observing the profiles of these eye movements, scientists can better understand neural deficits in patients with cognitive impairments. In this video, we will first look at an...
