Ferric Bromide

Ferric bromide is an iron(III) halide with the formula FeBr3, valued in chemistry as a moisture-sensitive Lewis acid and bromination reagent. By coordinating with molecular bromine, FeBr3 polarizes the Br–Br bond and enhances formation of an electrophilic bromine species; an aromatic ring can then undergo electrophilic aromatic substitution, followed by deprotonation to restore aromaticity. This mechanism makes ferric bromide useful for introducing bromine into aromatic molecules under controlled conditions and for studying reaction selectivity, catalyst behavior, and functional-group effects in organic synthesis. Its reactivity also requires careful handling because it reacts with moisture and can form corrosive products.
