Skin Color Evaluation

Skin color evaluation is the systematic assessment of skin pigmentation, redness, pallor, and other color changes to support clinical observation and documentation. It combines careful visual examination under consistent lighting with standardized scales or instrumental measurements, such as colorimetry or reflectance-based analysis, to reduce observer variation and capture changes over time. In clinical practice, these assessments can help characterize dermatologic conditions, monitor inflammation or treatment response, and identify changes associated with circulation or tissue injury. Reliable evaluation also supports research by providing reproducible outcomes for studies of skin disease, therapeutics, wound healing, and differences in pigmentation across individuals.

Changes in Skin Color: Clinical Perspectives

2023

The first thing a clinician sees is the skin, so the examination of the skin should be part of any thorough physical examination. Most skin disorders are relatively benign, but a few, including melanomas, can be fatal if untreated. A couple of the more noticeable disorders, albinism and vitiligo, affect the appearance of the skin and its accessory organs. Albinism Albinism is a genetic disorder that affects (completely or partially) the coloring of skin, hair, and eyes. The defect is primarily...

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome and twin anemia polycythemia sequence are two potentially devastating problems in perinatal medicine. Both disorders occur only in monochorionic twins and result from unbalanced blood flow through placental vascular anastomoses. We provide a simple protocol to accurately evaluate the presence of vascular anastomoses using colored dye injection of placental vessels after birth.
