Internal Cannula

An internal cannula is a small tube placed within the body to provide controlled access for delivering substances, collecting fluids, or monitoring a physiological site over time. Once positioned and secured, the cannula creates a stable passage between an internal compartment and an external connection, allowing researchers to perform repeated interventions while limiting additional surgical disruption; its use depends on the target tissue, experimental route, and study conditions. In immunology and infection research, internal cannulas support the timed administration of infectious agents or immune-active compounds, serial sampling, and analysis of local host responses. These approaches improve longitudinal studies of inflammation, pathogen spread, and treatment effects.

(2018)This video demonstrates the procedure for implanting a cannula into the cisterna magna of an anesthetized mouse. The technique involves guiding a needle-mounted cannula through the dura into the inverted triangular cisterna magna and securing it for targeted delivery into the cerebrospinal fluid.

Administering Oxygen by Nasal Cannula

2025

Oxygen therapy is critical to patient care, especially for those struggling with respiratory issues. This intervention increases the oxygen concentration in the lungs, enhancing the amount of oxygen transported to the body's tissues. One standard method of delivering supplemental oxygen is through a nasal cannula, a non-invasive device that provides low to medium oxygen concentrations. Nasal Cannulas A nasal cannula is a lightweight tube split into two prongs placed in the nostrils, connected...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia The goal of many chemical analyses is a quantitative analysis, where the amount of a substance in a sample is determined. In order to accurately calculate the concentration of an unknown from a sample, careful sample preparation is key. Every time a sample is handled or transferred, some of the sample can be lost. There are strategies however, for minimizing sample loss. There are also strategies for coping with sample loss and...

Internal Energy

2020

The total of all possible kinds of energy present in a substance is called the internal energy (U), sometimes symbolized as E. Suppose a system with initial internal energy, Uinitial, undergoes a change in energy (transfer of work or heat), and the final internal energy of the system is Ufinal. Change in internal energy equals the difference between Ufinal and Uinitial. Although the values for Ufinal and Uinitial cannot be determined for a system, the first law of thermodynamics only...
