Rat Surgical Model

Rat surgical models are experimental methods that use controlled operations in rats to reproduce defined physiological, pathological, or infectious conditions for biomedical study. By creating a standardized injury, altering an anatomical site, or introducing a condition under monitored laboratory protocols, researchers can examine how tissues and immune defenses respond over time. In immunology and infection research, these models help connect surgical changes with inflammation, pathogen-related outcomes, tissue repair, and systemic immune responses. Their value lies in providing an intact organism in which interactions among organs, immune cells, and infectious agents can be assessed, while careful standardization improves reproducibility and supports evaluation of potential interventions.

Posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus of prematurity (PHHP) can be modeled in neonatal rats by combining chorioamnionitis and intraventricular hemorrhage. The combination of these prenatal and postnatal events accurately recapitulates the clinical hallmarks of PHHP, including macrocephaly, ventriculomegaly, and elevated intracranial pressure, through the lifespan.

Creation of Reversible Cholestatic Rat Model

Cholestasis is a clinical condition commonly encountered by both surgeons and gastroenterologists. Creation of a reversible cholestatic rat model can be challenging in view of the smaller size and unique hepatopancreatobiliary anatomy in rats. This video article demonstrates the creation of a reversible cholestatic model.
