Ros Production

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is the generation of chemically reactive oxygen molecules that influence cellular signaling, metabolism, and host defense. In immunology and infection, activated phagocytes use NADPH oxidase to transfer electrons to oxygen, forming superoxide, which can produce hydrogen peroxide and other oxidants that damage or disable invading microbes. Controlled ROS production supports antimicrobial activity, inflammatory signaling, and coordination of immune responses, whereas excessive or poorly regulated ROS can injure host tissues and contribute to disease. Measuring ROS therefore helps researchers study phagocyte function, pathogen clearance, oxidative stress, and potential therapeutic strategies.

This study demonstrates the use of flow cytometry to detect reactive oxygen species (ROS) production resulting from activation of the FcγR. This method can be used to assess changes in the antimicrobial and redox signaling function of phagocytes in response to immune complexes, opsonized microorganisms, or direct FcγR cross-linking.
