Intestinal Tube Perfusion

Intestinal tube perfusion is an experimental method for examining how substances move across the intestinal wall, providing controlled measurements of absorption and intestinal function. In this technique, a test solution is introduced through a tube into a defined intestinal segment, allowed to contact the mucosa under controlled flow conditions, and then collected downstream to assess changes in composition. Researchers use intestinal tube perfusion to study drug absorption, permeability, transport, and secretion in medicine and pharmacology. The method helps connect intestinal physiology with medication performance and can support formulation development, dose evaluation, and investigation of gastrointestinal disorders.

The porcine model of liver normothermic machine perfusion (NMP), described here, can be successfully used to study NMP as a preservation strategy, a tool for viability assessment, and a platform for organ repair. It holds a high translational value, however it is technically challenging and labor-intensive.
