Omega-3 Supplementation

Omega-3 supplementation is the use of dietary products containing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), or plant-derived alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), to increase intake when diet alone may be insufficient. After absorption, these fatty acids become incorporated into cell membranes and influence lipid metabolism and signaling molecules involved in inflammation, blood clotting, and cardiovascular function. In medicine, supplementation is studied and used in contexts such as elevated triglycerides, cardiovascular risk, pregnancy-related nutrition, and neurodevelopment, although benefits depend on the specific fatty acid, dose, formulation, and patient population.
