Orofacial Defect Reconstruction

Orofacial defect reconstruction is the surgical restoration of form and function after congenital anomalies, trauma, infection, tumor removal, or other conditions affecting the mouth, jaw, face, and related soft tissues. Treatment combines principles of wound healing, tissue transfer, bone grafting, dental rehabilitation, and craniofacial surgery to replace missing structures, stabilize skeletal segments, and recreate functional relationships for breathing, speech, swallowing, and facial movement. Depending on the defect, clinicians may use local or free tissue flaps, vascularized bone, implants, prostheses, or staged procedures. These approaches improve appearance and quality of life while supporting cancer care, trauma recovery, and long-term functional rehabilitation.

Coronoid-Temporalis Pedicled Flap for Orbital Floor Defect Reconstruction

2025

This protocol presents a novel coronoid-temporalis pedicled flap (CTPF) technique for reconstructing small-to-medium orbital floor defects. CTPF avoids microvascular risks while maintaining biomechanical stability. Clinical cases demonstrate effective structural restoration, reduced complications, and preserved facial symmetry, offering a viable alternative to traditional grafts or alloplastic materials.

Inducing Orofacial Neuropathic Pain in a Rat Model via Infraorbital Nerve Ligations

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of orofacial neuropathic pain in a rat model by ligating the infraorbital nerve. This results in nerve damage and inflammation, causing abnormal pain signaling and mimicking chronic pain conditions, which can be used to study the orofacial pain assay.

This protocol describes the use of 3D planning and printing for reconstruction of bony defects. We use segmentation tools to create 3D models followed by 3D design software to create patient specific implants for reconstruction purposes concomitant to ablative surgery or as a second stage.

We present a user-friendly, high-throughput operant system for the evaluation of pain behaviors in awake, conscious rodents. The Orofacial Pain Assessment Device (OPAD) can assess pain through a reward/conflict paradigm thus providing a more humane way of testing. This protocol will yield more clinically relevant and translational data from rodents.
