Quantitative Ultrasound Features

Quantitative ultrasound features are measurable characteristics extracted from ultrasound signals or images to describe tissue structure and acoustic behavior objectively. They are calculated from properties such as echogenicity, texture, attenuation, and backscatter, using signal-processing or image-analysis methods that convert visual patterns into numerical data. In medicine, these features support the assessment of tissue composition, lesion heterogeneity, and disease-related changes that may be difficult to evaluate consistently by eye. Applied to diagnostic imaging, treatment monitoring, and research, quantitative ultrasound can improve reproducibility, enable comparisons across examinations, and contribute to computer-assisted analysis and personalized clinical decision-making.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University How do people find objects in cluttered visual scenes? Think, for example, of looking for keys on a messy desk, finding the ripest-looking fruit at the grocery store, locating your car when you can’t quite remember where you parked it, or finding an old friend at an airport exit gate. Clearly, an understanding of visual perception is going to play a role in any answers, and more specifically, an understanding of visual attention...
