Bone Landmarks

Bone landmarks are distinctive projections, depressions, ridges, and openings on bones that provide anatomical reference points and support the attachment or passage of tissues. In the skull and vertebral column, features such as foramina, processes, sutures, and grooves form pathways for cranial nerves, spinal nerves, blood vessels, and the spinal cord. Identifying these structures helps students and researchers orient neuroanatomical specimens, interpret medical images, and relate skeletal anatomy to nervous system organization. Accurate recognition of bone landmarks also supports clinical examination, neurosurgical planning, and the localization of neural injuries or lesions.

Here we present a protocol for the dissection of hind limb long bones (femurs and tibiae) from the laboratory mouse. We further describe a rapid technique for bone marrow isolation from these bones that utilizes centrifugation for removal of bone marrow from the bone marrow space.

Bone Marrow Aspiration: A Method to Obtain Bone Marrow to Examine Cell Morphology

2023

This video describes the technique of aspirating bone marrow from iliac spine and smear preparation for biopsy. In the example, we perform bone marrow aspiration from an acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patient and examine the cells to check for measurable residual disease (MRD), an important prognostic biomarker.
