Down Syndrome Model

A Down Syndrome Model is an experimental system that reproduces selected genetic, cellular, or behavioral features of Down syndrome, a condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, to investigate its biological effects. In neuroscience, researchers use engineered animals, patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells, and differentiated neurons to examine how increased dosage of chromosome 21 genes alters brain development, synaptic function, and neuronal signaling. These models help connect genetic changes with cognitive and neurological phenotypes, evaluate potential therapies, and clarify disease mechanisms that cannot be studied directly in human patients. Their complementary strengths also support more precise modeling of developmental timing and cell-type-specific effects.

This study proposed an age-adjusted regression modeling using midface and cranial base morphology as a potential tool for preoperative evaluation and individualized surgical planning for children with syndromic craniosynostosis (SC).

Lavage-induced Surfactant Depletion in Pigs As a Model of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Repeated pulmonary lavages in anesthetized pigs induce lung injury resembling major aspects of human acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). For this purpose the lungs are repeatedly lavaged with 0.9% saline at 37 °C. The goal of the protocol is a reproducible mitigation of gas exchange and hemodynamics for research in ARDS.

Conscious and Non-conscious Representations of Emotional Faces in Asperger's Syndrome

An EEG experimental protocol is designed to clarify the interplay between conscious and non-conscious representations of emotional faces in patients with Asperger's syndrome. The technique suggests that patients with Asperger's syndrome have deficits in non-conscious representation of emotional faces, but have comparable performance in conscious representation with healthy controls.
