Memory Testing

Memory testing is the systematic assessment of how information is encoded, stored, and retrieved, providing a practical way to study learning and memory in neuroscience. Tests present participants with material such as words, images, or spatial locations, then measure performance through recall, recognition, reaction time, or accuracy after a defined delay. Comparing results across tasks or conditions helps researchers distinguish working memory from long-term memory and examine how attention, aging, sleep, brain injury, or neurological disease affects cognition. These measures also support the evaluation of cognitive models, behavioral interventions, and potential treatments.

Spatial Memory Testing Using Mazes

2023

Spatial learning and memory are neurological functions that allow us to remember important details associated with our environment. Scientists test this phenomenon in rodents using different types of mazes like Morris water maze, Radial water maze, and Barnes maze. By investigating spatial memory in rodents, neurobehavioral scientists can gain valuable understanding of how these processes are altered following brain damage in humans. Here, the neurobiology behind spatial memory is briefly...

The Real-World What-Where-When memory test is a novel episodic memory test, in which participants need to recall which objects have been hidden in which locations on which of two distinct occasions. It is easy to run and is sensitive to normal cognitive aging.

An Introduction to Learning and Memory

2023

Learning is the process of acquiring new information and memory is the retention or storage of that information. Different types of learning, such as non-associative and associative learning, and different types of memory, such as long-term and short-term memory, have been associated with human behaviors. Studying these components in detail helps behavioral scientists understand the neural mechanisms behind these two complex phenomena. JoVE's overview on learning and memory introduces common...

Restoring Memory Formation in a Memory-Deficient Mouse Model through Allosteric Modulation

Begin with a genetically modified (GM) mouse with disrupted downstream signaling of mGluR5, a neurotransmitter receptor. In the hippocampus of a regular mouse, mGluR5 regulates endocytosis of fast-acting excitatory receptors from existing synapses, weakening them.Internalized receptors are recycled to newly formed synapses, strengthening them for memory formation. In the GM mouse, impaired mGluR5 signaling reduces receptor redistribution, disrupting new memory formation.Expose the mouse to a...
