Neonatal Mouse Pups

Neonatal mouse pups are newborn mice used to study early-life development, when the nervous system undergoes rapid structural and functional maturation. During this period, changing patterns of neuronal activity, synapse formation, myelination, and sensory input shape neural circuits and behavior. Researchers use neonatal pups in neuroscience to examine brain development, neurodevelopmental disorders, injury and repair, and the effects of maternal care or experimental treatments. Their small size, defined developmental age, and accessible early-life phenotypes support controlled investigations of how cellular and environmental factors influence the developing nervous system.

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

This article describes a method for generating a reproducible spinal cord compression injury (SCI) in the neonatal mouse. The model provides an advantageous platform for studying mechanisms of adaptive plasticity that underlie spontaneous functional recovery.

Transplantation of Interneuron Precursor Cells into the Brain of a Mouse Pup

Source: Quattrocolo, G., et al. Homochronic Transplantation of Interneuron Precursors into Early Postnatal Mouse Brains. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the transplantation of interneuron precursor cells into the neonatal mouse brain using either a homotopic or heterotopic approach. The procedure involves securing an anesthetized recipient pup, identifying the target brain region, and injecting a suspension of precursor cells derived from a donor pup at the same developmental stage.
