Nerve Suction Electrode

A nerve suction electrode is a neuroscience device that records or stimulates electrical activity from an isolated nerve by gently drawing the nerve into a fluid-filled electrode chamber. Suction creates a stable contact and partial seal between the nerve and electrode, allowing extracellular voltage changes to be detected or controlled while the surrounding solution maintains tissue viability. Researchers use this technique to measure compound action potentials, assess conduction and excitability, and examine how nerves respond to pharmacological, electrical, or physiological conditions. Its relatively stable interface supports controlled studies of peripheral nerve function and neural signaling.

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.
