Retinal Degenerative Conditions

Retinal degenerative conditions are a group of disorders in which retinal neurons, particularly photoreceptors, progressively lose structure and function, impairing vision and providing important models for neuroscience research. They can arise when genetic mutations, metabolic stress, or inflammation disrupt photoreceptor maintenance and communication with retinal pigment epithelial cells, leading to cell dysfunction and death. Studying these processes helps researchers connect molecular and cellular changes with altered visual signaling, while animal models, patient-derived cells, imaging, and electrophysiology support disease characterization. This work informs biomarker development and therapeutic strategies, including gene replacement, neuroprotective treatments, and cell-based approaches.

The non-human primate (NHP) is an ideal model for studying human retinal cellular therapeutics due to the anatomical and genetic similarities. This manuscript describes a method for submacular transplantation of retinal pigment epithelial cells in the NHP eye and strategies to prevent intraoperative complications associated with macular manipulation.

This video demonstrates three types of morphometric analyses of the retina, which include measuring the inner nuclear layer thickness, quantifying the number of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and measuring the sizes of RGCs. The technique can offer a simple but scientific platform for morphometric analyses.

Degenerative Disc Disease I: Introduction

2026

Degenerative disc disease is a chronic condition in which intervertebral discs gradually lose structure and function. It is not infectious or autoimmune; rather, it results from age-related biochemical and mechanical changes, influenced by genetic, metabolic, and environmental factors.Structure and Function of DiscsThe spine contains 23 intervertebral discs that absorb load, distribute forces, maintain spacing, and allow flexibility. Each disc consists of a nucleus pulposus, a gel-like core...

An Acute Retinal Model for Evaluating Blood Retinal Barrier Breach and Potential Drugs for Treatment

A low-cost, easy-to-use and powerful system is established to evaluate potential treatments that could ameliorate blood retinal barrier breach induced by histamine. Blood vessel leakage, Müller cell activation and the continuity of neuronal processes are utilized to assess the damage response and its reversal with a potential drug, lipoxin A4.

Modeling Retinal Degeneration and Regeneration in Zebrafish Using a Focal Laser Injury

2025

This video demonstrates a procedure to induce retinal degeneration in adult zebrafish using laser injury. The laser targets photoreceptor cells in the retina, triggering cell death and a degenerative process. This damage activates Müller glia (MG) cells, leading to their dedifferentiation into stem cell progenitors that aid in retinal regeneration.
