Neural Structures

Neural structures are the organized anatomical components of the nervous system, including neurons, glial cells, brain regions, spinal pathways, and peripheral nerves, that support sensation, information processing, and behavior. Neurons receive and transmit signals through electrical changes in their membranes and chemical communication at synapses, while glial cells maintain the cellular environment, provide metabolic support, and regulate signaling; together, these elements form circuits whose activity depends on connectivity and network organization. Studying neural structures in neuroscience helps link anatomy to function, clarify how movement, cognition, and sensory processing arise, and identify structural changes associated with neurological disease, injury, development, and potential therapeutic intervention.

We have developed an in vitro unfolded hippocampus which preserves CA1-CA3 array of neurons. Combined with the penetrating micro-electrode array, neural activity can be monitored in both the longitudinal and transverse orientations. This method provides advantages over hippocampal slice preparations as the propagation in the entire hippocampus can be recorded simultaneously.

Explant Culture of Neural Tissue

2023

The intricate structure of the vertebrate nervous system arises from a complex series of events involving cell differentiation, cell migration, and changes in cell morphology. Studying these processes is essential to our understanding of nervous system function as well as our ability to diagnose and treat disorders that result from abnormal development. However, neural tissues are relatively inaccessible for experimental manipulations, especially in embryonic mammals. As a result, many...
