Hollow Cylinder

A hollow cylinder is a three-dimensional object with circular bases and a cylindrical cavity, making it an important model for studying geometry, mass distribution, and motion in physics. Its mechanical behavior depends on the inner and outer radii, length, material density, and axis of rotation; because its mass lies away from the central axis, its moment of inertia differs from that of a solid cylinder. These properties help explain rotational acceleration, torque, angular momentum, and rolling motion. Hollow-cylinder models apply to pipes, tubes, flywheels, shafts, and structural components, linking idealized calculations with engineering design and experimental analysis.

Classical forelimb asymmetry analysis of the cylinder test is routinely used to assess behavioural deficits in rats following brain injury or stroke; however, it fails to detect consistent deficits in mice. This study demonstrates that quantifying paw-dragging behaviour is a more sensitive analysis of brain injury in mice.

Cylinders in Three-Dimensional Space

2026

A cylindrical surface is generated when a two-dimensional profile curve is translated along a straight line in three-dimensional space. The translated copies of the curve form a surface composed of parallel rulings, each oriented in the same fixed direction. This construction allows many three-dimensional forms to be described using relatively simple planar equations. In Cartesian coordinates, a cylindrical surface is often recognized by an equation that omits one of the three variables. For...

The functional behavior of cells in culture can be improved by culturing in more in vivo-like 3-dimensional culture environments16-21. This manuscript describes the set-up and operation of a hollow fiber bioreactor system for in vivo-like mammalian tissue culture.

Thin-Walled Hollow Shafts

2024

In analyzing a thin-walled hollow shaft subjected to torsional loading, a segment with width dx is isolated for examination. Despite its equilibrium state, this segment faces torsional shearing forces at its ends. These forces are quantitatively described by the product of the longitudinal shearing stress on the segment's minor surface and the area of this surface, leading to the concept of shear flow. This shear flow is consistent throughout the structure, indicating a uniform distribution of...
