Susan Fiske

Susan Fiske is a social psychologist whose research examines how people perceive social groups, form stereotypes, and respond to inequality. Her stereotype content model explains that judgments of groups often organize around warmth, reflecting perceived intentions, and competence, reflecting perceived ability; perceived competition and status help shape these evaluations and the emotions and behaviors they elicit. This framework clarifies why groups may receive mixed reactions, such as admiration combined with resentment or pity paired with neglect. Fiske’s work has influenced research on prejudice, discrimination, social cognition, and intergroup relations across psychology and related fields.

Application of Impermeable Barriers Combined with Candidate Factor Soaked Beads to Study Inductive Signals in the Chick

2016

Protocols using impermeable barriers to block induction events between tissues of the main body axis and flank in the chick embryo required for limb formation are described. Beads soaked in candidate inductive signals are used to overcome the effect of barrier placement and analysis of gene expression confirms this.

Novel, immunostaining-compatible tissue clearing techniques like the ultimate 3D imaging of solvent-cleared organs allow the 3D visualization of rabies virus brain infection and its complex cellular environment. Thick, antibody-labeled brain tissue slices are made optically transparent to increase imaging depth and to enable 3D analysis by confocal laser scanning microscopy.

Recording Gamma Band Oscillations in Pedunculopontine Nucleus Neurons

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is located in the brainstem and its neurons are maximally activated during waking and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep brain states. This work describes the experimental approach to record in vitro gamma band subthreshold membrane oscillation in PPN neurons.

From Constructs to Crystals – Towards Structure Determination of β-barrel Outer Membrane Proteins

β-barrel outer membrane proteins (OMPs) serve many functions within the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria, mitochondria, and chloroplasts. Here, we hope to alleviate a known bottleneck in structural studies by presenting protocols for the production of β-barrel OMPs in sufficient quantities for structure determination by X-ray crystallography or NMR spectroscopy.
