Disease Progression

Disease progression is the course through which a disease develops, changes in severity, or leads to clinical outcomes over time. In statistics, researchers characterize this course by analyzing longitudinal measurements, modeling changes in biomarkers or symptoms, and estimating time-to-event outcomes such as relapse, remission, or death. Methods including survival analysis, hazard models, and repeated-measures analysis help distinguish typical trajectories, identify factors associated with faster progression, and account for differences among patients. These approaches support prognosis, clinical trial design, treatment evaluation, and the development of evidence-based strategies for monitoring and managing disease.

Improved understanding of pancreatic cancer biology is critically needed to enable the development of better therapeutic options to treat pancreatic cancer. To address this need, we demonstrate an orthotopic model of pancreatic cancer that permits non-invasive monitoring of cancer progression using in vivo bioluminescence imaging.

Tumor Progression

2023

Tumor progression is a phenomenon where the pre-formed tumor acquires successive mutations to become clinically more aggressive and malignant. In the 1950s, Foulds first described the stepwise progression of cancer cells through successive stages. Colon cancer is one of the best-documented examples of tumor progression. Early mutation in the APC gene in colon cells causes a small growth on the colon wall called a polyp. With time, this polyp grows into a benign, pre-cancerous tumor. Further...
