Muscles of the Thorax

Die tiefe thorakale Interkostalmuskulatur und das Zwerchfell sind entscheidend für die Atmung.

Während der Inhalation zieht sich das Zwerchfell zusammen und flacht ab, um das Volumen der Brusthöhle zu vergrößern.
In der Zwischenzeit hebt die externe Interkostalkontraktion die Rippen an und erleichtert die anteroposteriore und laterale Ausdehnung der Brusthöhle.
Während der Ausatmung entspannt sich das Zwerchfell, und die inneren Zwischenrippen ziehen sich zusammen, um mit Hilfe der innersten Gruppe die Rippen zusammenzuziehen, wodurch sich das Volumen der Brusthöhle verringert.

Es entsteht unterhalb des Brustkorbs und der Lendenwirbel und setzt an der zentralen Sehne an. Wenn es sich zusammenzieht, bewegt sich das Zwerchfell nach unten und flacht sich ab, wodurch sich das Volumen der Brusthöhle vergrößert und Luft in die Lunge gelangt. Beim Ausatmen entspannt es sich und nimmt wieder seine Kuppelform an, wodurch es dabei hilft, Luft aus der Lunge auszustoßen.

Der Brustkorb besteht aus elf Interkostalmuskelpaaren, die in drei Gruppen eingeteilt sind: die äußere, die innere und die innerste Gruppe. Die äußeren Interkostalmuskeln entstehen am unteren Rand der oberen Rippe und setzen am oberen Rand der darunter liegenden Rippe an. Am aktivsten sind sie beim Einatmen, wo sie sich zusammenziehen, um die Rippen anzuheben und die Brusthöhle zu erweitern. Die schräg stehenden inneren Zwischenrippen weisen dagegen entgegengesetzte Ursprungs- und Ansatzstellen auf. Sie unterstützen in erster Linie die forcierte Ausatmung, indem sie die Rippen nach unten und innen ziehen, um das Volumen der Brusthöhle zu verringern. Die innersten Interkostalmuskeln, die oft als Teil der inneren Schicht betrachtet werden, spiegeln die Wirkung der inneren Interkostalmuskeln wider und sind beim Ausatmen ähnlich aktiv, um dabei zu helfen, den Brustkorb zu komprimieren.

Darüber hinaus beherbergt der Brustkorb Muskeln wie den großen Brustmuskel, den kleinen Brustmuskel, den vorderen Serratus und den Subclavius, die die Bewegungen der Schulter und der oberen Gliedmaßen erleichtern und den Schultergürtel stabilisieren. Thorax muscles help breathing and support movement in the upper body. They also help keep the chest stable. Together, these muscles make the rib cage move while the lungs fill and empty.

The diaphragm is the main breathing muscle in the thorax. It is a wide, dome-shaped muscle that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. It starts below the rib cage and lumbar vertebrae and attaches to the central tendon. When it contracts, it flattens and moves downward. This increases the space in the thoracic cavity and draws air into the lungs. During exhalation, it relaxes and returns to its dome shape, which helps push air out.

The rib cage also contains eleven pairs of intercostal muscles. These muscles are arranged in three groups: external, internal, and innermost. The external intercostals run from the lower edge of one rib to the upper edge of the rib below it. They are most active during inhalation, when they lift the ribs and expand the chest cavity. The internal intercostals have the opposite fiber direction and attachment pattern. They mainly help with forced exhalation by pulling the ribs downward and inward. The innermost intercostals are often treated as part of the internal layer, and they also help compress the rib cage during exhalation.

The thorax also contains the pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, serratus anterior, and subclavius. These muscles help move the shoulder and upper limb. They also help stabilize the shoulder girdle. In this way, thoracic muscles work with the breathing muscles to support both respiration and upper body posture.
