Microbial energy and carbon sources determine how microorganisms live and grow. These metabolic strategies help microbes survive in many habitats and keep energy moving through ecosystems. They also support nutrient cycling in nature.

Microbes are grouped by where they get energy, electrons, and carbon. Phototrophs use light, while chemotrophs use chemical compounds for energy. Lithotrophs take electrons from reduced inorganic substances, and organotrophs take them from organic compounds. Autotrophs fix carbon dioxide, while heterotrophs depend on organic carbon molecules.

These traits combine into several major metabolic groups. Photoautotrophs, such as cyanobacteria, algae, and green plants, use light for energy and carbon dioxide for carbon. Cyanobacteria do oxygenic photosynthesis, which releases oxygen by splitting water. Anoxygenic photoautotrophs, such as green sulfur bacteria like Chlorobium and purple sulfur bacteria like Chromatium, live without oxygen and use sulfur compounds such as H2S as electron donors. Their bacteriochlorophyll pigments absorb light at longer wavelengths.

Photoheterotrophs also use light for energy, but they need organic compounds for carbon. Green nonsulfur bacteria like Chloroflexus and purple nonsulfur bacteria like Rhodopseudomonas are examples. They are often found in nutrient-rich or polluted environments. Chemolithoautotrophs get energy by oxidizing inorganic compounds and use carbon dioxide as their carbon source. These microbes play major roles in nitrogen, sulfur, and iron cycling.

Several chemolithoautotrophs support key biogeochemical cycles. Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter oxidize ammonia and nitrite during nitrification. Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria such as Thiobacillus use hydrogen sulfide or elemental sulfur and produce sulfate. Iron-oxidizing bacteria such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans convert ferrous iron to ferric iron. These microbes are important in acidic places, mine drainage systems, and deep-sea hydrothermal vents.

Chemoorganotrophs get both energy and electrons from organic compounds. Many bacteria, fungi, and microbes that live with humans belong to this group. They break down organic matter and help recycle nutrients. Rhodococcus erythropolis is one example because it can degrade petroleum hydrocarbons and other pollutants, which makes it useful in bioremediation.

Chemoheterotrophs also use organic compounds for both energy and carbon. Most pathogenic microorganisms and saprophytic decomposers belong here. They are important in nutrient recycling and in industries such as food production and pharmaceuticals. Many microbes also show metabolic flexibility. For example, purple nonsulfur bacteria can switch between phototrophy and chemoorganotrophy depending on oxygen availability.
