Metabolism consists of all the biochemical reactions in an organism and is divided into the catabolic and anabolic pathways.Catabolic pathways break down complex molecules like carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins into smaller units. Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that keep living cells working. It includes reactions that break down biomolecules and reactions that build them up. These two sides of metabolism work together to support energy balance and cell function.

Catabolic pathways break large molecules into smaller parts. Carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins can be broken down into monosaccharides, fatty acids, and amino acids. These reactions release energy, and cells store much of that energy as ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, the main energy currency of the cell.

Cellular respiration is a major catabolic process. It includes glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. During this process, glucose is used in a series of redox reactions to make ATP.

Anabolic pathways do the opposite job. They use ATP to build important biomolecules. Cells use anabolism to make proteins from amino acids, nucleic acids from nucleotides, and polysaccharides from monosaccharides. This supports growth, tissue repair, and cellular differentiation.

Some pathways have both breakdown and build-up roles. The Krebs cycle is an example of an amphibolic pathway. It helps oxidize acetyl-CoA to produce ATP, NADH, and FADH2, and it also supplies precursor molecules such as α-ketoglutarate and oxaloacetate for biosynthesis.

Metabolism is controlled so cells do not waste energy or materials. Feedback inhibition is one key control method. In this process, the end product slows an earlier enzyme in the pathway. Allosteric regulation, covalent modifications, and hormones such as insulin and glucagon also help adjust metabolic flow to match the cell’s needs.
