Triglyceride dienen als langfristige Energiespeichermoleküle in Mikroorganismen. Lipasen hydrolysieren Triglyceride zu Glycerin und freien Fettsäuren. Jede Komponente wird dann über unterschiedliche Wege verstoffwechselt. Glycerin wird zu Glycerin-3-phosphat phosphoryliert und in Dihydroxyacetonphosphat umgewandelt, das durch Glykolyse oxidiert wird. Fettsäuren durchlaufen eine β-Oxidation, einen Stoffwechselprozess, bei dem zwei Kohlenstoff-Acetylgruppen systematisch aus der Fettsäurekette entfernt werden. Dieser Prozess erzeugt Acetyl-CoA, während NAD+ und FAD als Elektronenakzeptoren fungieren und zu NADH bzw. FADH₂ reduziert werden. Acetyl-CoA tritt in den Krebszyklus ein, durchläuft eine weitere Oxidation und produziert zusätzliches NADH und FADH₂. Die Elektronen aus NADH und FADH2 werden bei der oxidativen Phosphorylierung zur Erzeugung von ATP genutzt. Viele Bakterien sind in der Lage, Fettsäuren und Erdölprodukte auf ähnlichen enzymatischen Wegen abzubauen, was bei der biologischen Sanierung, wie z. B. bei der Reinigung von Ölverschmutzungen, von Vorteil ist.

Glycerinstoffwechsel

Dieses Zwischenprodukt wird anschlie&#223;end durch Glycerol-3-phosphat-Dehydrogenase zu Dihydroxyacetonphosphat (DHAP) oxidiert. DHAP wird dann in den glykolytischen Stoffwechselweg integriert, wo es weiter zu Pyruvat verarbeitet wird. Pyruvat unterliegt einer oxidativen Decarboxylierung und bildet Acetyl-CoA, das in den Citratzyklus eintritt. Durch diese Reaktionen werden Elektronen auf NAD^+ und FAD &#252;bertragen, wodurch NADH und FADH_2 entstehen, die in der oxidativen Phosphorylierung zur ATP-Produktion genutzt werden.
&#946;-Oxidation von Fetts&#228;uren
Fetts&#228;uren werden &#252;ber die &#946;-Oxidation katabolisiert, einen schrittweisen Abbauprozess, der im Zytoplasma von Prokaryoten und in den Mitochondrien eukaryotischer Mikroorganismen stattfindet. In diesem Weg werden Fetts&#228;uren durch Acyl-CoA-Synthetase aktiviert und es entstehen Acyl-CoA-Derivate. Jeder Zyklus der &#946;-Oxidation entfernt nacheinander zwei Kohlenstoffatome in Form von Acetylgruppen von der Fetts&#228;urekette, wodurch Acetyl-CoA, NADH und FADH_2 generiert werden. Acetyl-CoA tritt in den Citratzyklus ein, durchl&#228;uft dort weitere Oxidationen und liefert zus&#228;tzliche Reduktions&#228;quivalente f&#252;r die Elektronentransportkette. Die Oxidation von NADH und FADH_2 via oxidative Phosphorylierung f&#252;hrt zur Bildung von ATP, der prim&#228;ren zellul&#228;ren Energiew&#228;hrung.
Mikrobielle Nutzung und Bioremediation

Microbes break down triglycerides and fatty acids to make energy. Triglycerides are important long-term energy storage molecules in microorganisms. Lipases hydrolyze, or split with water, triglycerides into glycerol and free fatty acids. Each product then enters a different metabolic route that helps the cell make ATP, the main energy currency.

Glycerol metabolism begins after glycerol is released from triglyceride hydrolysis. Glycerol kinase adds a phosphate group to form glycerol-3-phosphate. Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase then oxidizes it to dihydroxyacetone phosphate, or DHAP. DHAP enters glycolysis, where it is processed into pyruvate. Pyruvate is converted to acetyl-CoA by oxidative decarboxylation, and acetyl-CoA enters the Krebs cycle. During these steps, electrons are passed to NAD+ and FAD, forming NADH and FADH2 for oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production.

Fatty acids are broken down by β-oxidation. In prokaryotes, this pathway occurs in the cytoplasm, while in eukaryotic microorganisms it occurs in mitochondria. First, acyl-CoA synthetase activates the fatty acid to form an acyl-CoA derivative. Each cycle of β-oxidation removes a two-carbon acetyl group from the chain. This process produces acetyl-CoA, NADH, and FADH2. The acetyl-CoA then enters the Krebs cycle and is oxidized further. The NADH and FADH2 feed the electron transport chain, where oxidative phosphorylation generates ATP.

Some bacteria can also use similar pathways to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. Pseudomonas, Alcanivorax, and Rhodococcus are examples of microbes with this ability. They use enzymes such as oxygenases and lipases to turn hydrocarbons into intermediates that join central metabolism. This microbial activity is important in bioremediation, especially during oil spill clean-ups. Microbial consortia can break complex hydrocarbon mixtures into less harmful compounds, which supports environmental sustainability and other uses in biotechnology and energy production.
