Bacteria build essential macromolecules through tightly controlled biosynthetic pathways. These anabolic reactions make proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and polysaccharides. The products support growth, cell division, and normal cell function.

Bacterial biosynthesis starts with precursor metabolites from glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, and the Krebs cycle. Important precursors include pyruvate, acetyl-CoA, and glucose-6-phosphate. Cells use these compounds to make the monomers that serve as building blocks for larger molecules, such as amino acids, nucleotides, fatty acids, and sugars.

These reactions need energy and reducing power. Bacteria supply that demand with ATP and NADPH. ATP comes from catabolic processes such as oxidative phosphorylation, and NADPH is also generated through pathways such as the pentose phosphate pathway. This link helps the cell use resources efficiently without draining its energy stores.

Many bacterial enzymes can act in both anabolic and catabolic pathways. This dual role helps conserve materials and gives bacteria flexibility when conditions change. However, irreversible steps in biosynthesis require separate enzymes so the cell can regulate each pathway on its own.

Bacteria also control biosynthesis with allosteric control, feedback inhibition, and covalent modification. Allosteric control changes enzyme activity when a molecule binds at a different site. Feedback inhibition slows a pathway when enough product has already been made. Because bacteria do not have membrane-bound organelles, biosynthetic and catabolic reactions occur in the same cytoplasm, which supports close metabolic coordination.
