Functional Recovery

Functional recovery is the return or improvement of an organism’s ability to perform behaviors after injury, disease, developmental disruption, or other impairment. It can arise through neural plasticity, in which surviving circuits reorganize, strengthen alternative pathways, and support relearning, while practice and environmental changes help reinforce effective responses. In behavioral research, scientists assess recovery by measuring changes in motor performance, cognition, communication, or daily activities over time and comparing them with baseline function. These measures clarify how biological repair and behavioral adaptation interact, guiding rehabilitation strategies and the evaluation of interventions designed to restore independence.

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.

Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are neural crest cells which allow growth of the primary olfactory neurons. This specific property can be used for cellular transplantation. We present here a model of cellular transplantation based on the use of OECs in a laryngeal nerve injury model.
