Infrared Video Recording

Infrared video recording is a behavioral observation technique that captures movement and activity under low-light or darkness using cameras sensitive to infrared wavelengths. Near-infrared illuminators provide invisible or minimally visible lighting, while the camera records reflected infrared energy without relying on ordinary white light that could alter an animal’s behavior. This approach enables continuous monitoring of nocturnal activity, social interactions, locomotion, and responses to environmental conditions in laboratories and natural settings. Infrared footage can support behavioral coding, automated tracking, and quantitative analysis while reducing observer disturbance and extending observation beyond daylight hours.

Source: Reindl, V., et al. Conducting Hyperscanning Experiments with Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. J. Vis. Exp. (2019) This video demonstrates the use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure brain activity during social interactions. Participants engage in a coordinated task that increases activity in the prefrontal cortex, a region critical for social behavior, while the system detects changes in light absorption due to blood oxygenation. By analyzing the synchrony...

Here, we present a protocol to image a strawberry plant freezing in 3 dimensions. Two infrared cameras positioned at slightly different angles are used to produce a red-blue anaglyph video to observe the freezing of the plant in 3 dimensions.

Assessing a Functional Neuromuscular Junction Via Simultaneous Optical Stimulation and Video Recording

2025

This video demonstrates a method to assess functional neuromuscular junctions. Using a bioreactor containing muscle tissue and motor neurons, along with fluorescent microscopy, the light-sensitive channels in the neurons are stimulated to generate electrical signals, causing muscle fiber contractions.

Video-oculography is a very quantitative method to investigate ocular motor performance as well as motor learning. Here, we describe how to measure video-oculography in mice. Applying this technique on normal, pharmacologically-treated or genetically modified mice is a powerful research tool to explore the underlying physiology of motor behaviors.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Zhiwei Chen, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the use of infrared (IR) spectroscopy (also known as vibrational spectroscopy) to elucidate the identity of an unknown compound by identifying the functional group(s) present. IR spectra will be obtained on an IR spectrometer using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) sampling technique with a neat sample of the unknown.
