Parasitoid Wasp Venom

Parasitoid wasp venom is a complex biochemical secretion that alters host physiology, enabling a wasp to establish and develop its offspring inside or on another arthropod. Injected during oviposition, venom compounds can act on neural, immune, endocrine, and metabolic pathways, often suppressing host defenses and changing development or behavior. Its components include proteins, peptides, enzymes, and small molecules whose effects depend on the host and wasp species. Biochemical study of this venom reveals strategies for manipulating cellular signaling and immune responses, supporting research on parasite-host interactions, bioactive molecules, and potential applications in pest management and therapeutic discovery.

This article provides a protocol for the extraction of venom from spiders using electrical stimulation in order to 1) conduct proteomic characterization, 2) stimulate venom gland gene expression, and 3) perform functional studies of venoms. This is followed by a description of venom gland microdissections for gene expression studies.

Fopius arisanus is an egg-larval parasitoid of Tephritid fruit flies that is successfully used in biological control of these important tropical pests. We describe here an optimized protocol for rearing F. arisanus on a small scale using readily available materials.

Optimizing the Rearing Procedure of Germ-Free Wasps

2023

Nasonia wasp embryos were dissected from Lucillia sericata pupae after parasitization for 12-24 h and washed with alcohol and 10% sodium hypochlorite solution to obtain germ-free embryos. After rearing the germ-free embryos and supplying them with Nasonia rearing medium to grow and develop in vitro, germ-free Nasonia adults were obtained.
