Primary Treatment

Primary treatment is the initial therapeutic intervention used to address a disease, injury, or biological disorder, making it a central step in clinical biology and patient care. It works by targeting the main cause or mechanism of a condition, such as removing abnormal tissue, suppressing infectious agents, replacing a deficient biological function, or supporting recovery while the body repairs damage. The selected approach depends on the diagnosis, disease severity, biological targets, and patient condition. Primary treatment can control disease, restore physiological function, reduce symptoms, and provide a foundation for additional therapies, including maintenance, supportive, or rehabilitative care.

Established cancer cell lines and xenografts have been the mainstay of cancer research for the past several decades. However, recent evidence suggests that therapeutic response is greatly influenced by the tumor cell microenvironment. Therefore, we have developed an ex vivo analysis of primary tumor specimens for drug development purposes.

Primary Neuronal Cultures

2023

The complexity of the brain often requires neuroscientists to use a simpler system for experimental manipulations and observations. One powerful approach is to generate a primary culture by dissecting nervous system tissue, dissociating it into single cells, and growing those cells in vitro. Primary cultures make neurons and glia easily accessible to the experimental tools required for techniques like genetic manipulation and time-lapse imaging. Furthermore, these cultures represent a highly...

Using Primary Neurosphere Cultures to Study Primary Cilia

The primary cilium is fundamentally important in neural progenitor cell proliferation, neuronal differentiation, and adult neuronal function. Here, we describe a method to study ciliogenesis and the trafficking of signaling proteins to cilia in neural stem/progenitor cells and differentiated neurons using primary neurosphere cultures.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease. The Goeckerman regimen, formulated for the treatment of psoriasis, consists of exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) light and application of crude coal tar (CCT). The following protocol is for the administration of Goeckerman therapy for the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis.
