Robotic Instrumentation

Robotic instrumentation combines robotic hardware, sensors, actuators, and computer control to automate the precise handling, measurement, and manipulation of biological materials. In laboratory systems, programmable controllers coordinate actions such as liquid transfer, sample positioning, imaging, and timed processing, while feedback from sensors can support accurate and repeatable operation. These platforms help biologists standardize experiments, reduce manual variability, and process many samples efficiently. Applications include automated cell culture, high-throughput screening, molecular assays, and microscopy workflows, where improved reproducibility and data consistency support research in genetics, microbiology, drug development, and systems biology.

Herein is described a robotic approach to high-throughput crystallization of membrane proteins in lipidic mesophases for use in structure determination using macromolecular X-ray crystallography. Three robots capable of handling the viscous and sticky protein-laden mesophase integral to the method are introduced.
